For those of you who experience intense emotions, I want you to know that this is actually a positive trait. The most successful people in the world are those who not only feel their emotions deeply but also have the ability to manage them effectively. Just look at David in Psalm 51—he openly expresses feelings of guilt, torment, and brokenness while also seeking restoration of joy.
Indeed, we can cycle through a range of emotions within minutes, and when our emotions spiral out of control, it often leads to impulsive and reckless behavior and causes conflicts in our relationships.
So, what does the Lord ask of us in such moments? Psalm 46:10 instructs us to "Be still and know that I am God…" The Hebrew term for "be still" conveys the idea of surrendering, letting go, and releasing. In this context, it means surrendering our will and trusting in God's power and sovereignty.
Psalm 20:7 says, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God”. During the time of David, chariots and horses were a sign of great military power and it represented the strength of the kingdom. Psalm 20:7 reflects the immense trust David had in the Lord, reminding us that while some rely on earthly strength symbolized by chariots and horses, we must place our trust in the name of the Lord our God for victory.
But how can we practically apply this surrender and trust?
Returning to Psalm 46:10, being still involves pausing, taking a deep breath, and observing. When we release, we let go of the conflicts or burdens we're holding onto, allowing them to fall into God's hands. Even when our emotions seem overwhelming, we can choose to pivot our focus to Christ and declare His truth over our circumstances. Our feelings may indicate our temporary emotional state, but they do not dictate the truth of God's promises or our future.
Mastering the art of redirecting our focus from emotional turmoil towards God is a journey that requires time and practice. Some days, it may only take a couple of tries, while on other days, you might find yourself needing to pivot countless times. Nevertheless, rest assured that the Lord sees your efforts and will meet you right where you are, guiding you closer to Him with each step.
I encourage you to invest in learning how to manage your emotions effectively. Seeking support from a counselor can be immensely beneficial as you navigate this process and grow both emotionally and spiritually. Remember, it's okay to ask for help along the way.
Dear God, you see me in the sea of my emotions. I pray that you help me surrender all the things I am holding on to in my hands. As I release my grip, I lay them at your feet and trust that you will take care of each worry in a magnificent way that brings me peace as well as glory to your name. Thank you Lord for taking such good care of me. Amen.
